'04 Eddie Bauer 4.0
Hi, i have a 98 5.0 Eddie Bauer. I just took out my 1000 watt amp and 2 12's (guess i outgew it lol) and put my stock HU back in and liked the sound of the factory sub. Eh, a week later the sub blew! I want to replace it, i just tried taking it out and i took out all the screws and cannot get it to pull out. Something is definatly holding it in there. What step am i missing? Knowing me ill end up breaking something important, so i figured id ask here first.

There pry is the screw/bolt that supports from the back side...

You have to take that whole side panel off, well most of it anyways. Don't forget the two screws at the bottom. You'll also have to take off the top seatbelt bolt as well. Then remove the three bolts from the sub box. Then if you look in the back there is a bolt holding the sub in the box. I just did this and replaced my stocker with the JL Audio 8W1V2. Very clear sound and I am extremely happy with it. Great replacement for the stock and fits perfectly in the box after drilling new holes. Would probably sound even better if I replaced the amp back there as well.

If you don't mind me hijacking the tread here a little bit, how did you do this? Did you use the same enclosure and stock amp? Or what?

Not sure if this is what you're asking but I used the stock enclosure and stock amp. The only thing I had to do was drill new holes to mount the sub. They did not line up. Other than that pretty much plug and play. Let me know if that is not what you mean and I will clarify.

Thats exactly what I was looking for, thank you. So that JL Audio w8 will fit then, I am assuming. How does it sound, and how much did you pick it up for. I am ever interested in this, because the stealth boxes are so expensive.

My system is all screwed up by the previous owner, so I think my best route would be to use the stock enclosure with an Alpine amp that I already own (it use to drive two JL Audio 10w3's) and run new RCA and power wires to the amp.

Thanks for the info, I just might have to do this!

If you have a '96-'97 I think your stock sub is 6.5" instead of 8" which '98 and up uses. I HAVE A '99 AND THIS WILL WORK FOR EXPLORER'S WITH A STOCK SUB SIZE OF 8"! So double check on that. Otherwise...

Like I said the only thing that I had a problem with was the stock screw holes did not line up with the JL sub. The diameter of the JL sub must be just a slight bit smaller, but not much. So you just have to hold the sub up to the box, mark where you want the new holes then drill them out. The mounting depth is perfect as well. You will want a sub with 4" or less mounting depth (might be hard to find) otherwise you will need a spacer. Once you drill the holes out you just cut the little clips off of the stock wiring, strip off a little bit of the wire insulation and it hooks right up. Like I said, this is a great replacement for the stock sub. Perfect fit (other than drilling new holes) sounds very good. The sound is extremely clear. No overly loud or anything, just depends on the song. Definitely better than stock. I wanted to keep it hidden and I like the stock look so I'm very happy.

The part number in my previous post was the sub I bought. Not sure if JL makes a 6.5" in that model or not. I got mine off of ebay for a pretty good price. Audio Club was their store name. I was happy with the service. I think Crutchfield sells it as well. I can take some pictures of it tonight if you would like.

JUST BE SURE TO CONFIRM YOU STOCK SUB SIZE BEFORE YOU BUY SO YOU DON'T GET THE WRONG ONE!

hahah I have a 95, Ill have to look. I need to take down the headliner to figure out why my sunroof is rattleing, so that will be a good time to check it out.

thanks again.

damn. i wish i didnt have to take apart the whole panel. maybe ill just rip the sub out haha

I don't think you'll be able to rip it out without messing some stuff up.

It's really not that bad. Just pop all the little plastic pins holding it on. Then remove I think two screws from the bottom of the plastic under the edge of the carpet. Then remove the upper seatbelt bolt with a torx head (star) socket, and you should be able to get enough room to remove the three little bolts holding the sub enclosure in. Then pull it out and remove the bolt from the back of the sub. Might take you a half an hour. Ask if you have any questions.

Passenger side rear panel in the cargo area. If you have a sub, you will see the cover on the panel. If you don't have a factory sub, they you will just have a storage compartment.

97SHOgt....exactly what subwoofer do we need here? Is it a 4 ohm or 8 ohm? Shoot...I've even seen 2 ohm. Thanks!

The one I purchased was a 4ohm. It is working great and I haven't had any problems with it. Could you use the other two, I don't know. When I was shopping I believe somebody said I could use the 8ohm. You might want to post this question in the Audio/Video Forum on here. They would be more knowledgeable than me. I'll try to post a picture tonight of my sub.
