replace auto transmission fluid

i have a 97 xlt with a 5 speed auto can i replace my transmission fluid by disconnecting the line near my cooler and ldle the motor in drive until the fluid stops pumping all will this damage the gearbox torque convertor .

Dave,
If you go to the resources section of this web site and search a little there are two or three play by play descriptions for changing out the ATF.
