I need to replace the shocks in 99 Mercury Mountaineer AWD, don't do offroad but tow some. Any suggestions on whats best? Also, is it easy to get a replacement for the 5th shock.

Thank's, like a big dummy I just tried this am. and from all the info think I'm settling on
ES3000, but one site has upgrade to ES9000 for free, but I think they won't ride the same since they are gas instead of hydraulic. I tow some, but after I found an upgrade to an F350 pick up using ES3000 I think they will work for what I need.

Which ones are the ES?

Done, ordered ES3000's

Orderd them from this link

Another site said that ES3000's were not available for my 99 Mountianeer, but
same site said they were for Ford Explorer....

My Haynes manual says that Explorer, Mountaineer, and Mazda something are all the same thing.

Hopefully I'll get a UPS box in a couple days.

Never heard of an "ES3000" or "ES9000" shock but if they are for the 2nd/3rd gen Explorer they will fit your Mountaineer.

Your Haynes manual probably covers all years of Explorer, which means this: 91-94 Explorer is mechanically the same as 91-94 Mazda Navajo. (But that doesn't really apply to you). 95+ Explorers pretty much mechanically identical to Mountaineers.
Exterior and interior trim are the major differences. Mazda quit making their "Explorer" SUV (the Navajo) after 1994.

Didn't a lot of the second generation mountaineers have the Automatic Ride Control AKA load-leveling suspension? If so, that could be why they don't list them for it....
