i have the AL silver one.
should i rewire it for the new black plastic ones?
also what would keep the tech from reading my check engine codes?

I don't know about the EGR sensor.

About the tech reading codes -- a few things could prevent him/her from getting codes from the PCM.
1) What is the tech using to read codes? It seems that there are several cases where the tool the tech is using has trouble communjicating with these older vehicles, or the tech doesn't know how to get the tool to communicate with the PCM. When someone is having trouble getting codes using a scanner/code reader, I like to suggest that they try pulling codes the "poor man's" way (which only requires a paper clip or other jumper wire). The procedure is described in several places here. Go to the EEC-IV forum and read the stickies.
2) Make sure the PCM has power and ground.
3) Bad connection between the PCM and the self-test connector.
