My explorer is missing, a scanner indicated #8 misfire. The plugs were replaced a few months ago along with #5 and #6 coils. It cost me an arm and a leg at the dealer. Is it absolutely neccessary to remove the fuel rails to replace the igntion coils on a 2004 explorer 4.6l. The rails are right on top of the coils. It looks like there is a little wiggle room

The coils come out just fine without messing with the fuel rails. You will want to check the plug well for moisture, as the intake manifold tends to fail and leak coolant into that area fouling the coil/plug.

Thanks Josh. I'm going for it after work today!

Josh is dead-on. You can change that whole driver's side coils without moving anything.
