Ive read several manuals plus a couple of online listings and Im still not certain of what the gauge is checking. Is the gauge measureing deflection of the R/G left and right when the pinion is turned? I assume this because B/L is adjusted with spacers left and right on the carrier bearing. Right? So, assuming that my understanding is correct so far, the gauge should be set up to measure the side of the gear.? However, the pictures that Ive seem seem to have the gauge on the rear of the gear. Any help would be appriciated.

Hold the pinion gear still, move the ring gear back and forth. that movenent of the ring gear is where you get your backlash measurement. Get it as close to the minimun backlash as possible so you wll have extra when the gears wear over time. Check the manual for specs!! I think my 93 was .08 to .16 inches.

Chris, the gauge is set on the R/G edge and the movement is at a right angle to the pinion.?
THanks

Yes! Set on the edge of the ring gear and move the ring up and down with the pinion not moving. That will be the back lash!

Hope I helped!

Yeh, thanks. I'm waiting on an Eaton locker to become available. Right now I'm riding around with 3:73's in the rear and 4:56's in the front (broke rear carrier on original axle). Lord willing, Ill be rebuilding the original axle myself and installing the locker.

You should be able to do it yourself. I did both of mine having never done it , EVER! It wasn't hard, just very tedious and time consuming! Just follow all the steps very closely. Geting the shims right is the most PITA! Let us know if you need any more help. Good research and the right tools will make the diference.

Good luck!

I made contact with Eaton this week. The Elocker should be on the selves by the end of the month!
Thanks again.
