Replacing Stock radio on 96 Sport

I have a radio i bought a while back and want to replace the stock one. Whats the difficulty level in doing this. What do i need to know before i try this. I was told i could get a harness and a new mounting bracket since the new stereo wont fin without the stock face plate.
I have some basic understanding of wiring and im willing to learn

any suggestions would be accepted

Its relatively easy. You will need a wiring harness and plastic mounting kit. I bought both of these from walmart for about 15 -20 bucks.you basically plug the new wiring harness into the existing one. then you match the color coded wires from the new harness to the back of the new radio.(wire nuts work a lot better than just twisitng the wires and using electrical tape.)dont forget to plug in your antenna cable. next snap the plastic mounting housing to the new radiop and set it into place.hope this helps. let me know if i need to be more specific. good luck

also, you need to know which harness kit you will need. i think (THINK, i ran into this problem with my 98, but it varies from a certain year up) there is 3 different ones. you may also have to bypass your factory amp that is in the rear 1/4 trim panel on the passengers side. you should be able to find a lot of info on this in the audio/navigation section.

Do i have to buy an antenna or can i use the one from the stock stereo.
Why is it that i would need to bypass the amp? I cant seem to find much on this in the audio navigation.

you can use your stock antenna. the reason why you would have to bypass your amp is, the aftermarket stereo more then likely will have a amp built into it. if you run that through a second one, you are amplifying a already amplified signal, which would majorly distort the sound, even at a very low volume level.

Im not sure which is the amp. I tried looking but im not sure which are the amp wires. I bought the harness which came with 2 cables. One had a green plastic connector case and the other was gray. which would be for the amp?

you would have to buy a amp harness kit separately. by the sound of it, you have the ones that you need for your new head unit.

Do i have to use both? The green connector is for the speakers and the other is for power correct?
On the green connector there is a black with white stripe cable. What is if for? I dont seem to have a cable to connect it to.

you will need both. i think the extra one would be for a factory sub, but i can't say for sure.

I connected all the cables but for some reason i have no sound. I plugged in the antena but i cant hear anything. The stereo gets power and im able to cahnge stations but i get no sound. Any ideas why

Ok i managed to get it working. I was not powering the car amp. There was a blue wire wich was for the amp and read 12v i plugged this wire into the a yellow 12v wire witch gave power to the stereo. Can i leave this wire there? will it casue any type of short?
The yellow wire i believe is for powere to go on when the ignition key is turrend on.
