Reprogramming Speedometer

Does anyone have any Idea how I can make my speedometer accurate. I've heard the newer Explorers can be done on the computer. Mine is a 94 and with the 32's it is off by about 10% (55mph when it says 50mph) The genuis at the Ford dealer told me I have to run 235/75/15 tires. Some people never learn!

Your '94 has a speedometer gear. It is on your transfer case if you have 4x4 or at the end of your transmission if yours is 2WD. It costs about $8 from your Ford dealer. Take yours out, count the teeth, and get one that looks just like it but with 10% fewer teeth. It helps to take yours in with you so you can match it up. They can have a hard time finding the right one for you if you don't bring in the original.

In the wheels and tires board, I posted a chart that lists all of Ford's speedometer gears and their part numbers. Each gear is a different color. Use the chart that has the same color as your original regardless of whether the chart says for automatic or manual. My '97 4x4 originally came with a black gear that was listed as a manual transmission even though I have an automatic. I ended up getting a pink one from the same chart.

Here is the chart:

Manual Transmission:

16 tooth wine(C0DZ-A)
17 tooth white(C3DZ-C)
18 tooth yellow(C0DD-B)
19 tooth pink(C0DZ-B)
20 tooth black(C1DZ-A)
21 tooth red(C4OZ-A)

Automatic Transmission:

16 tooth blue(D0AZ-A)
17 tooth green(C7SZ-A)
18 tooth gray(C7SZ-B)
19 tooth tan(C7VY-A)
20 tooth orange(C8SZ-B)
21 tooth purple(D0OZ-B)

What year did they eliminate the speedometer cable. I thought my 98 did not have one, but if your 97 had one, well I'm confused.

Hold on I may have answered my own question. Even without the cable, you still need the gear. Right?

Am I to understand that some late models can have speedo recal via the computer?

If so what does this cost?

Thanks...

Check with GJarret. I think he is the one that had his reprogrammed. It costs between $75 & $90. Someone else here went through the "run-arounds" with their dealer when they tried to get theirs reprogrammed. They had a hard time finding a dealer that would do it but they eventually ended up finding one. Check over on the Tires & Wheels board for the discussion.
