Resonator muffler question

ok I know this has been brought up before but as I live in one of the most stringent smog states is the third cat/resonator necessary to pass California smog(the one with no downstream 02 right before muffler). I have it installed already with resonator but would like to get rid of it. I believe I did on my 02 and that's why I'm not as happy with the sound but it's been awhile.

1st, move out of California. 2nd, give it a try and see. I doubt it'd be an issue. California is only reading the PCM and checking the fuel cap. They'll do a visual check of the engine but won't crawl under the car to look at the exhaust system.

Well I skipped number 1 and went directly to number two. So much better sound and pickup wise and about 100 pounds lighter.
