I was schooled not to use 0/40 Castro Synthetic in my 4.0l. I'm replacing the Castro with Havoline Pro DS Synthetic (please don't say there's something wrong w this oil 5 quarts $21...) 5/30 in tomorrow morning. I have 120 miles on the current oil filter. Must I replace the oil filter? I have a new filter on deck but I would rather spare the new one. It meets Fords oil requirements.

If the filter is one week old, the 0/40 oil must be one week old too? If you're tossing that, I'd toss the filter too.

Tossing both then. Thanks.

I would have left it assuming it was a quality filter and/or the same you are using. I have done quick changes many time for various reasons and leave the filter in since my OCI is shorter than most. The filter would have sufficient capacity to trap contaminants.

I kept the filter on the bench. I'm having Black stone look for motor oil or tranny fluid mixed with coolant. I have some sort of black blobs in the radiator and reservoir tank. Oil looks to be free of coolant.
