Just wanted to say thanks to all who have provided work arounds for modifying 1998 Explorers. A month ago I was very frustrated with the 4x4 shops in my area cause they don't want to recommend using parts that aren't specifically designed for that model and year.
I started with 225-70-15s and a ground to fender lip height of just over 29 inches, I ordered the Pro Comp add-a-leafs (part# Exp-13120) $46.63 Canadian, and Warrior Shackles (part# War153) $102.00 Canadian, The shop had the shackles in stock and 2 days to get the add-a-leafs
It took me about 2.5 hours to swap out the shackles and add the leafs, and twist the torsion bars. I added new 31-10.5-15 General ATII and ground to fender clearance grew to 35 3/8 inches.
Ride stiffened and the rear doesn't sag with the trailer now. I took it out on the weekend and went where I'd never been before. brought back a 800 lb Cow Moose in the back and it only dropped about a inch.
and the best part of all my wife loves it so no headache for dropping a grand on parts and tires.
