rough idle in my 99 sohc

I have a 99 SOHC that has gradually gotten worse rough idle ...Yesterday I took the IAC off and cleaned and checked all connections...installed new plugs and wires....checked the TPS ...and the MAF....one thing I noticed doing all this was when I unplugged the MAF while still running it got smoother...but then it died...got me to wondering if it could be the MAF that is my problem...it wants to rough idle around 500-1000 rpms.
