I've got a 2004 explorer limited. I've noticed that when accelerating from a stop, the back tires feel like I'm driving over rocks. Not going to say bouncy, more like driving overy gravel. It lasts about 3 seconds and then it's smooth driving. Anyone have any ideas????

do you feel like a grinding or a humming noise after the gravel sound goes away? this generation of Explorers are known for their bad rear wheel bearings (and fronts)

Has the truck been sitting long (a few days or so) in the cold or rain? sometimes rotors rust up and brakes scrape the oxidization off which sounds like gravel. My wifes new CRV sounded like this all the time.

I have some other ideas, but not enough information about the sounds. good luck

I would suggest bearings or differential.
