Any ideas on the idea of using sheet neoprene rubber for flooring as opposed to the ever-popular Line-x. I was just thinking that using neoprene rubber could provide better sound insulation, and possibly better heat insulation than Line-x. It would probably cost about the same, if you DIY the neoprene rubber, depending on what grade neoprene rubber you choose to use. Also, you wouldn't have to worry about the gaps from tearing out the carpet because the neoprene rubber can be basically as thick/thin as you like, so if you chose rubber approx. as thick as the original carpeting, then the gaps from removing the carpet would be filled in by the neoprene rubber.
I don't think the neoprene rubber would look as nice (it's just smooth rubber), but other than that I can't see any real problems.
Also, they make "fire-resistant" neoprene rubber, which is resistant up to 250F, so I figured that could be used in the front near the engine for additional insulation.

Please comment - Thanks.

i was wondering about this too. i know the surplus police cruisers out here have rubberized interiors. i been wanthing that instead of the rat colored carpet in my 91

Thanks, and, in my continuing research, I think EPDM rubber might work well too (I can find it for a bit cheaper, and it seems about equal with neoprene for our application, sometimes EPDM has even better heat ratings).
Gen. info on EPDM
"Textured" EPDM - a bit more attractive than just smooth rubber, and cheaper than fire-resistant neoprene.
Fire-resistant neoprene

EDIT: I also emailed DAP about the idea regarding if their Weldwood Contact Cement Gel or Weldwood Multi-purpose Floor Adhesive would be better for adhering the EPDM to the vehicle's metal underfloor. I wouldn't be surprised if I got an email back telling me that doing such things to a vehicle isn't a good idea - ha!
