Hi

My daughter has a 94 Explorer. She got it from a ex boyfriend and it wasn't exactly babied or maintained.

One of the problems she has is that it is eating gas rather quickly. It starts easily and runs not bad but when idling it will start spewing out black (smells of raw gas) so it is running waaaay rich. I'm not sure where to begin with this . I had wondered about the O2 sensor but someone else suggested it being a coolant sensor or a maf sensor. Driving around it runs and accelerates OK with the odd time it stumbles off of idle which seems low 600ish according to the tach.

Anyway if someone has an better idea of what might cause this I would appreciate the help. I'm trying to get the right sensor the first time so I don;t end up putting a lot of money into this thing.

Thanks!

My advice is simple....don't guess and throw parts at it.

Check the plugs to see if they are fouled or wet, clean the MAF and make sure the air filter isn't plugged up.Check the fuel pressure to see if it is in range, remove the fuel pressure regulator hose and see if there is gas in it that would tell you it has failed.

So far you have spent about $10 on the above items,if all is good I would have a scan tool hooked up and see what codes you have, just replacing sensors can get expensive and may not fix the problem.:D

Throwing parts at is is exactly what I want to avoid. I I know the parts but I don't know how they will make things behave when they fail. Cheap repairs is good, free is gooder ;) I'm in the middle of moving as well as not being able to walk very well right now so

So I take it you would say the maf is more of the suspect here? I understand the fuel pressure and how that will vary the volume for the injection shot.

TNX!

For something running that rich, I'd start with the fuel system over a sensor. As safn1949 suggested, check the fuel pressure and check for gas in the vacuum line to the FPR.
