Just bought an old explorer (95 XLT) FRONT END STARTED SHAKING AND a clanging noise began, The wheels lock up completely in reverse. It seems to be the front drivers side, and i am assuming it is the bearings over there. Haven't been much of a grease monkey in the past due to illness. I have markedly improved over the last year and would like to make a "learning" project out of my truck. Can anyone tell me what to check, and when the problem is found, point me to a "Fix it" tutorial?

Kinda hard to diagnose it from behind a computer as it could be many things. First thing you are gonna have to do is get the front end jacked up and on some jack stands. I would start by grabing ahold of your wheels, cv axles, and front driveshaft(assuming its 4wd) and checking them for looseness. Also, if it is 4wd, are you sure its not engaged?
