So i'm going to pick up a new (to me) 2002 explorer next weekend from my mom. The truck is in great shape, but has high mileage (177,000) on the original transmission, which is obviously scary. She started having shifting issues (2nd-3rd as normal) so she parked it. She then went and bought a new vehicle, so she's selling me hers for a great price.
I'm going to be flying up from Florida to pick the truck up in Ohio next weekend. My dad says the solenoid is the problem, and the code says the same thing, so I'm planning to get the entire solenoid pack/block replaced. My questions then:
1. Do I drive the truck down to Florida as-is, and then get it repaired once I'm back in Florida? Obviously I'm going to be on the highway for the majority of the trip, so there won't be too much shifting taking place from 2nd-3rd gear (probably less during the entire trip, than in a single day driving around town).
2. Do I get the solenoid pack replaced before I get to Ohio, so that it is fixed for the ride back. I know this is probably the safer move, but I also won't be able to source parts anywhere but the dealership if they find anything else wrong with the transmission(belts, valve body, etc), which will end up costing a fortune.
3. I'm already planning to replace the filter while we're doing the solenoid pack, but I've also found a remanufactured/tested valve body for $39. Should I just plan to purchase this and have it installed at the same time as the solenoid pack? I've noticed quite a few people mentioning problems with the valve body as well, so for $40 should I just go ahead and replace it?
Any input is greatly appreciated!! Todd.
