huh?.......you dont need to back it up......to put it into 4-lo you need to put it into netural and put your foot on the brake. The same goes for shifting out of 4-lo as for 4-hi on a first gen im not entirlly sure.

I never had had to. Just push the button and keep going. In my experience, salesmen RARELY know anything about the product they sell lol

ok so shift the tranny into nuetral and hold the brake down while holdong down eigher the 4lo or 4wd transfer case shifter button until it lightsup..just shift it back into drive and drive forward?.

you only have to put it into neutral for 4-lo for 4hi im pretty sure its shift on the fly.

ive done it befor not backing up, and it feels like it does shift in after goin maybe 10 ft or so in reverse and goin back into drive..

To shift it into 4H just push the 4h button, the light should come on indicating you are in 4 high.
If you want to shift it to 4Lo, I recommend you stop first, shift the tranny to neutral, push the 4LO switch, you should see the light come on and hear a clunking noise, meaning the Transfer case has engaged in 4 LO, shiff to First or Second and you are ready to go.
To shift out of 4 LO you need to follow the same procedure. Stop, shift to neutral, push the 4L switch, light on the dashboard should go off, shif to drive and you are good to go

No.. All you need to do is

1) Push 4x4 button.... when 4x4 button and dash lights come on your in 4x4 (shift on the fly)
2) Push 4x4 Button again when 4x4 button and dash lights go out your in 2 wheel drive. (shift on the fly) Thats it...

To Shift into 4x4 Low range (not shift on the fly) you must 1st already be in 4x4. You then need to shift into Neutral (put clutch in for manual transmission) & come to a stop and then press 4x4 Low.. When the dash and buttom 4x4 Low lights come on your in 4x4 Low.. To shift out of 4x4 Low you must shift into neutral, put clutch in for manual transmission, come to a stop and press 4x4 Low... Sensor will prevent shifting into/out of 4x4 low if the transmission is not in Neutral, clutch isn't in, or the speedo indicates more than 3mph...

Now the whole thing about backing up (actually it is reversing direction) is to unlock the automatic hubs. The Hubs stick out of the front wheels and physically connect the wheel to the front axle shaft. Backing up just unlocks them and will save some fuel 1-2mpg as the front axles and drive shaft will no longer be connected to the front wheels and therefore not moving.. Bottom line is you don't need to backup or reverse direction as the auto hubs (as the name implies) will automatically unlock when you reverse direction...

Also the 4x4 can be used in reverse gear, while in 4x4, stop and put it in reverse like normal, as you back up the hubs will unlock, and then relock.
