shocks or struts???

i have 02 mountaineer with 123000 miles. got it with 96000 dont know if shocks ever been replaceds. looking on rockauto and they have them listed under shocks and listed under struts. they both look the same. which should i get?????????????? THANKS

fronts are struts, rears are shocks.

If you have third gen, you have struts all the way around. Take a look under the rear, if you have leaf springs, you have shocks, if don't have leaf springs, you have struts.

how hard is it to replace with the spring there???? need any special tools????

you need a spring compressor, if your not familiar, the job is not for you

You have a 3rd gen. You will need a spring compressor. I believe you can borrow/rent one from autozone, oreilly's, etc. If you are at all mechanically inclined, I am confident you can change them yourself. It's usually easier to take something apart than put it back together If you are hesitant, then ask around at some local shops to see what they will charge to change them for you. If its a fair price, then buy the struts of your choice and have them install them. I haven't looked at rockauto, but here is a site I found that offers you some different shock choices-http://www.shockwarehouse.com/
