96 EXPLORER XLT 4.0L 4X4
I have a 96 explorer XLT 4X4, 4;0 engine. it's got 178000 miles. The problem I have is that I have a short and it keeps blowing fuse # 26 on the drivers side of dash fuse box.I have already posted this question once before and got one response, which i checked out..This fuse has the O/D off switch. THE 4x4 switch the back up lights and the rear defroster on the circuit. It mostly blows when I start shifting from park into drive, although some times it blows as soon as I replace it.I have tried disconnecting the shift sensor,b/u lite switch and the 4x4 motor connector also the back up lite bulbs . I have tried shaking all the wires by the transmission and other places under the dash with the key on in park and in drive but can't duplicate the problem.Has anyone else had this problem? Thanks Davey B.99

I'd personally start checking if there are any damaged wires anywhere, trunk wires would be where i'd start the search (rear defoster, etc.)

I can't remember how the wires go back there, but i remember similar problem from other car which did exactly same thing, we searched the problem from everywhere, but it was simply the broken wire which hit "ground", the insulation of wire was worn.

Edit: The broken wire was in the wire bunch which went to trunk electrics, heater, etc.

i don't recall whether anyone suggested you look for pinched/broken/bare wires in the area of the steering wheel. i'm assuming your truck is equipped with tilt-wheel? over time, from the wheel moving up & down, the wires that go through this area fatigue and/or rub on something metal, wearing through the insulation which causes a short. i would remove the plastic shrouding from around the steering wheel and inspect the OD OFF switch wires very carefully.
