Hey everyone! Need some quick assistence. Shade's motor crapped out last night, so i went to the salvage yard today and got another motor! Kris and I took the timing cover off and examined the front guides, which look ok. However, we noticed some slack in the driver side timing chain (circled in black) and the the bottom guide (circled in yellow) can be moved back and forth. Is this normal? Thanks!

(The picture below is NOT of my new engine, just a pic I found on here)

back & forth?

The area of chain that you have marked on the photo is on the traction side of the cassette. The tensioner is on the slack side and consists of a housing and piston controlled by a combination of spring and hydraulic pressure. The tensioner presses against the side of the guide assembly to tension the chain.
With the engine off there is no hydraulic pressure. The spring pressure is insuffient to keep the tight on the traction side. In certain positions of the crankshaft the valve springs are compressed forcing the camshaft to slightly rotate to relieve valve spring pressure.

The metal frame of the cassette guide assembly bolts to the block. The plastic guide parts clip onto the metal frame. See SOHC V6 Timing Chain Parts Sources . The clips allow a small amount of movement. The amount is dependent on the company manufacturing the assembly. If the plastic piece is not loose then the lower portion of the guide assembly is probably not broken.

Well, upon firther investigation in the light of the garage, it was discovered the front guide was indeed broken, and the back guide was cracked. So we will be returning the motor under warranty and go back to plan A, fix the timing on Shade's original motor and install it back in the truck. Thanks for your help bud!!

SOHC V6 Timing Chain Inspection & Repair

Check the rear guide on the original engine first. There's no use wasting time on the front if the rear guide is broken since the engine will have to be pulled. SOHC V6 Timing Chain Inspection & Repair

Absolutly, I have Shade's original motor in storage (ran fine when pulled, just rattled) that I will be doing front and rear guides on and Kris Guilbeax will be removing the balance shaft for me. I also have access to all the cam tools at work to get the timing set correctly on it. The motor currently in Shade is going to the trash pile

So whats the Deal with the Warranty issue , Cash back ? .

At our salvage yard we go to, anything you buy, you can get a warranty on for a dollar a day. On the engine, we got a seven day warranty, and thus got everything we paid for back to us.

Nice Sounds sort of like a Pull a Part .
