Hello:

I am having a shuddering steering problem with my 2002 V6 Explorer with 143K. Going forward, the wheel rotates slightly to the right, stops, and then rotates slightly to the right some more. When going backwards the wheel rotates slightly to left, stops, and then rotates slightly to the left some more. The rotate, stop, rotate pattern appears to be related to the speed as it increases in frequency as I go faster.

Does this sound like a front bearing problem?

Thanks.

swap front tires side to side see if that makes a difference.

It turns out the problem was that the steel belt broke on the Continental tire.

From talking with the tire people, Continental tires not only have a history of this, but usually have to be replaced due to tread wear at half of the 80,000 mile warranty.

This is the first time I have ever had a warranty claim processed without me having to argue with the store/manufacturer. Unfortunately, it wasn't much of a warranty as the tire was prorated.

I am very grateful that the tire didn't pop while I was going 65 mph.

However, I think I'll pass on Continental tires from here on out.
