silly ? about my auto tranny

OK, I have a 93 XLT with 3.73 and Traction-lok differential. One thing that has somewhat confused me is that our auto tranny shifts into what seems like 5 different gears. It shifts from 1-2, 2-3, 3-4, then kindof a half shift, 4-5. I believe the newer explorers do have a 4 speed auto with overdrive. Was this also available for a 93?

Could this be a sign that something is wrong? I tried searching for this, but doesn't seem like a big issue.

The newer, 98 and up I think, Explorers have a 5 speed auto w/OD. I think what is happening is it's going through the 4 main gears and then that little bump shift is in't OD. I am not sure if that is 100% correct because I have the "5spd auto w/OD" and it shifts up 5 gears and them a little bleep down from 2500 to 2100 rpm on the highway. I thought that would be OD, but when I hit the OD button to off it downshifts one gear and the change in rpm is more like from 2200 to 3000.

Maybe someone knows tha right answer here.

It's actually the torque converter locking up I beleive. On the 4-speeds it's 1-2, 2-3, 3-3, 3-4, somewhere in the 3-3 the TC does it's thing. 97+ explorers have five speed autos w/overdrive. 91-96's have the 4-speed autos w/overdrive.

It's your torque converter locking up. Step on the gas lightly and it will unlock again.

So my 92 auto is the same as my dads 95 in terms of gearing. Just wondering because I have 3.73s and was wondering if it would drive like his with 3.27s and 235s if I had 33s. He turns his overdrive off unless hes on the highway (65MPH +), and I don't have to. But I could if I had 33s. Then I would have the low RPMs on the highway too. Is anyone else running 33s with 3.73s?
