I have had a nightmare with my 4x4 system in the last few months. I get a loud whirring sound as I increase in speed (like a turbine spinning up). It started all of a sudden...

Now the CAD doesnt work (I think its a solenoid issue). Ive been diagnosing things left and right and think ive pinpointed to the noise being the transfer case not disengaging.

So my question: With the car running and in 2wd, transmission in Drive and the parking brake on (and chocked), should I be able to spin the front driveshaft freely? I cant move it at all...

by the way its a 96 XLT 4.0L with 4wd.

wow, dangerous way of testing, but i believe you should be able to spin the front wheels/drive shaft this way as the t-case should not be connecting the front d/s. i assume you also have the front wheels off the ground during this test, right?

Figured it out. It was a GEM issue. I had replaced it but didnt realize that the part I got was from a 97 AWD model. Everything works great now!
