Okay ive been contemplating buying a exhaust for my x..its a 4.0L OHV, now ive been leaning towards the flowmaster 40 series non-delta. Now do i need the offset/offset muffler or the center/center one. Also i was gonna keep the 2 1/4" pipe will i still have a decent sound?? Or will it not even make a difference.

PLEASE ANY answers will be helpful

That 2 1/4" pipe is restrictive. I have a 50 series and 2 3/4" pipe from the catback on my v8 and it howls. A 40 series on the v6 is going to scream, literally. but i'd step up the pipe a bit too. Can't beat Flowmaster, good American manufacturing, and it's fun setting off car alarms in the parking garage downtown.

the only reason i didnt want 2.5" is because i heard of 4.0's losing low end power....and torque...

Is there truth to this

yes there is, 2.75 is a bit large for the v6, the 2.5 would be the better choice i belive.

But what about the 2 1/4 thats whats in question...will it make a noticeable sound/power difference

acctually form waht i have read on the OHV the 2.25 pipe is the way to go, as far as the difference in sound i do not belive that it would be that noticeable, but the larger the pipe size you use the more low end power that you loose, but you do gain high end power, so i guess you have to consider the pros and the cons

yeah 2.25" size or you start loosing power. i ran a 3" muffler with stock 2.25" pipe and lost some off the line power. but gained passing/high RPM power. its a trade off.

Thanks guys i really really am loving the input!!!!!

Now can anyone tell me if the stock muffler is offset/offset or center/offset..

PLEASEEEEE LOL

Go crawl under and look. Easiest way to find out.

Yeah i want to but unfortunately the weather hasnt been cooperating...thats why i asked if anyone knew offhand

Sorry can't help. My V8 is dual in, single out.

so is my sohc

I hate to hijack this thread, but if i was to stick with the stock piping on my 99 SOHC, would a higher flowing muffler help much? I already have a MAC intake. What kind of muffler do you recommend if i dont want to be deaf after driving 10 hours on the highway, which i do all too often? Thanks.

I'd go with a 70 series from Flowmaster, great flow without having the entire neighborhood hearing you. Of course i like my 50 Series on the v8, keeps the people in the backseat out of my conversations.

I like the Flowmaster Super 40 I have on my V8. It dumps right in front of the rear axle (didn’t have time to fab up a tailpipe). Surprisingly, the muffler sounds so deep and throaty that it really doesn’t resonate too much. In fact, at idle it’s almost as quite as the stock muffler. Hit the gas and old ladies start running.

JMO, but you should be careful about dumping the exhaust under the truck. The back hatch makes a swirling effect while going down the road, which can bring exhaust gasses into your cabin. This is not a problem with pickups, but SUV's are prone to this problem. In some states it is illegal to have exhaust like that, meaning there must be piping all the way to the rear. You are right though, exhaust dumped under the truck sounds mean.

Ya that’s a good point. I don’t know if it’s illegal or not in Ontario (probably is). Can’t say I have smelt any fumes but I usually drive with the windows down anyhow (No AC in the summer=HOT, no AC in the winter=moisture=24/7 frozen windows). Hopefully, the snow will be gone in another 2.5 months and I can get back to work on her.
