Small box behind Rearview Mirror

Would someone tell me what the small 2 inch box located behind the rearview mirror is for. I have an 08 Sport Trac and have been looking through my manual but have yet to find out what it is.

I found answer below...it's the compas

Compass is correct. If you unplug it then in your gauge cluster instead of a compass heading (N, S, SE, etc) a small dash will appear. I removed my stock mirror in favor of a Homelink one, so I had to reattach that box so as to avoid this dash:

I just did the same thing. Replaced the auto-dim mirror with the auto-dim & Homelink mirror. Had to re-attach the compass 'box' to the new mirror.
