Hello, I've a 2003 Ford Explorer with 104K miles on it, 4.0 V6 engine. I have an issue with left rear brakes. I noticed that smoke is coming from the left rear wheel brake area and it's a very strong odor. me and the wife noticed it after stopping at a gas station for some goodies. Can anyone tell me what the problem may be? The pads aren't completely worn out and the rotor looks fine. Is the culprit an stuck caliper? Should be caliper be replaced and or can it be repaired? This thing was so hot after driving it around 70 miles or so. I was afraid it would catch fire. it smoked for a whle after parking vehicle. Have any of you experienced this problem before? If so, how did you resolve it? The calipers have never been replaced. Or could the problem be the emergency brake shoes beneath the rotor? Thanks in advance for any assistance!

Might be the emergency brakes, sometimes over time they disintegrate due to corrosion. The brake shoes are inside the rotor. When was the last time you have the parking/emergency brakes replaced? mine disintegrate at 60k.

The emergency brakes shoes were replaced at 86,000 miles or 18,000 miles ago. Could it be something came lose? I will definitely check it out once I disassemble the brakes. Thanks for responding!

If I had to guess you may have a bad caliper. Maybe a tear in the boot. It's not that expensive from auto parts store. Change it out as soon possible because the heat can damage the bearing or wheel catch on fire.
