SOHC 4.0 general engine timing while in the car

Did an engine swap with a friend at his place. He did some work on it without me there and now the engine sounds rough. I'm guessing he didn't use the timing tool kit that I had left at his place. Is there a way to fix the timing of the engine while the engine is still in the car? If so how do you do that?

The timing can be checked/reset with engine in the truck. You need the OTC6488 timing tools, especially the dog leg socket for rear left hand threaded cam cassette bolt on passenger side.
