I pulled my Kenwood CD player out of my 91 Taurus and want to put it into my 92 X which has the premium HU. The Taurus has a base HU so the only one of the connections works (the power) the wiring in the X for the speakers has the sheilded cable connector and I am going to buy the adapter for this today. I believe the X has an external amp in there somewhere but I don't know where it's located. If it has the amp, will there be problems running an amped signal from the Kenwood deck to it? Also does the factory amp have RCA adapters I could run to it to avoid any problems from running an amped signal to the amp? I hope some of this makes sense...

Thanks for your imput,

Nate

You'll need an amp bypass wiring kit which should come with instructions on what you need to do. I liked Crutchfield's kit very much.

Some members say it's ok to run through the factory amp but I don't think so. I think you should run the bypass kit. Good luck!

Any idea what a bypass kit runs and would it connect between the HU and amp and change the signal or would it just bypass the amp altogether?

simply put, the head unit wires run to the rear behind the panel in the cargo area (passenger side) to the amp then from the amp to the speakers. the amp bypass kit basically is a jumper that takes the amp out of the system thus routing the output from the head unit to the speakers via the long route. (i found this out as i was installing my pioneer hu in a 97 mountaineer). unfortunately i couldn't find a bypass kit and i had already pulled the factory unit out and installed the aftermarket bracket, so i just chopped the plugs off at the amp and spliced the two harnesses together. i also labeled the wires so i would know where they went if i had to go back later. (good idea if you go this route). it worked fine. also if you decide to add an aftermarket amp for your highs and mids. you can run directly to the splice point instead of all the way to the hu. i hope this helps.
