I have a 92' XLT 4WD with 187k miles on it and the thing stills runs..sorta.

What I have done to it just to rule out problems:

I have changed the IACV.
Cleaned the MAF.
Totally emptied the catylitic converters because they were plugged up.
Run injector cleaner and octane booster.
Front and rear brake lines replaced due to them bursting.
Aftermarket CD player.
New air filter.

Problems that I am curently having:

1. After cleaning the MAF the engine pings like you've never heard one ping! It only pings when I gove between 55-60 and not at WOT. When i stomp the gas and get past 60 it goes away.

2. After 60mph the front end begins to vibrate so I take her back down a notch or two.

3. I was dinking around and pulled the TPS (Throttle Posistion Switch) off and it might not be correctly aligned now.

4. When the brakes are applied the whole truck shakes because I have a warped rotar.

When I replace the rotars up front should i do wheel bearings also?

5. I think my tierod is shot too because the vibrations at high speeds?

6. The engine doesn't seem as strong as before, but it's strong enough to lay a nice strip or do a nice smoker when I tell her to.

7. If I don't let her warm up for a bit the tranny takes alot longer than normal to shift into 2nd and 3rd.

My 4WD works fine though (not shift on the fly but auto hubs, pansy button :(( )

8. Neither rear doors open from inside or out.

9. Rear hatch doesn't open either but glass does.

10. Gas guage stays on full all the time.

My questions:

Can I bypass the EGR to gain performance?

Can I modify the air box to gain performance?

What can I fit on the thing for rims, as in matching bolt patters?

What other cheap easy modifications can i do to gain performance and gas mileage?

-Any and all info is greatly appreciated!!

1) Have you torqued lower intake manifold bolts/replaced intake manifold gasket? This is another common cause of ping on these engines. Also check for other small vacuum leaks

2) Basic checks are in order: wheel balance, alignment (make sure you get a good shop. not everyone can do a good alignment on the TTB), loose front end components (including tie-rods).

3) TPS is a basic potentiometer and is easy to test with a voltmeter/ohmmeter. Specs have been posted before, and should be easy to come by in a good manual.

4) Bearings aren't that expensive. Certainly inspect/pack the wheel bearings if they seem in good enough shape to keep.

5) See 2

6,7,8,9) NC

10) Sounds like there's a short/open somewhere in the fuel sender circuit.

One last comment: You can't gain performance by bypassing the EGR system, because a '92 didn't come with an EGR system.
