Hello everyone,
This is my first post on this site. I have a 2001 Ford Explorer XLT and and I'm interested in possibly adding a tailgate mounted spare tire carrier to it. I have the stock wheel and tire size and I'm probably not going to lift it and use it off road. I'm more interested in keeping it somewhat stock, but also do an occassional mod to improve gas mileage and add my personal touches. The reason for this mod is to have better access to the spare and because it is already somewhat difficult to remove because the trailer hitch (a tubular hidden hitch) leans against it, which would make any flat tire more of a hassle than it needs to be. I am open to suggestions on whether or not to keep it where it is or go through with this mod. I am willing to try any idea that would extend the distance between the hitch and the spare tire. Feel free to post ideas and pictures of either the hitch mod or what you have used or made as a tailgate mounted spare tire carrier- whether on road or off. I will soon try to see if loosening the hitch, pulling it outward a bit, and re-tightening it will make a sufficient enough difference making both of these mods a want more than a need. Thanks
