Spare Tire

I was just wondering what keeps the cable holding the spare under the truck from letting down and letting the tire just fall to the ground. I took mine down today and oiled the cable and rolled it back up but not sure just how it stays up there.

no clue man i just know that it stays when you want it to and comes down when you want it to...

There is a gear driven mechanism attached to a frame crossmember up there.

Ford make a supplimentary retainer for the spare wheel that attaches to the frame and goes across the wheel to a bolt and wingnut, I had it fitted to my 97.

Since I have a 31" crammed up in there, it doesn't go up all the way. So I have a bungee supplementing the stock system so the tire doesn't rock back and forth
