Speaker wire question ......

Would 16ga wire be big enough to run to new 6x8's i got with a 60x4rms amp ? Or should i get larger wire ? Also any ideas where i can mount the amp besides under the rear seat ? Its a 1995 4 door. Thanks guys !!!!

yes 16 gauge is big enough.

you can mount the amp anywhere...under the front seats. Behind either rear side panel totally hidden, lots of room in there. Or in the cubby where the stock sub is located. Or mount the amp to the carpet covered metal flap between the backseats and cargo area.

When you say Behind either rear side panel.. Are you talking about in the cargo area ? I would like to keep it out of site. I was curious is it a wise idea under the seat. Will it get wet ? We get the crappy white stuff here called SNOW. A four letter word that everyone dont like to hear.. LOL..

yea i was talking about in the cargo area. Heres a pic of the 2nd batt in my explorer. The 4 channel amp was about 18" foward of the batt behind the panel mounted vertically.

less likely to get wet behind rear side panels than it is under the front or rear seats. Unless your rear side window has a major leak which is very unlikely and easy to fix with some silicone

For the actual power you'll send those 6x8's, 24ag wire would handle it without voltage drop. 16 will be great. I actually ran all 18 in my Trac. No problems at all ('cept for a bum amp )

16 gauge is enough for 1000 watts...you have no worries with full range speakers unless you are powering a concert.

if you do have overheating problems install some 12 volt fans to circulate air.

I have a Kenwood X1R @ 1 ohm running behind the factory panel on my Trac with no problems whatsoever. In fact, I ran 8 Rockford Punch DSM's mounted upside down under the rear deck of a car for several years with no issues. I think people make too much fuss over the cooling. Just keep space for air to circulate (ie: don't put a blanket on it).

I never had overheating issues at all. The only time Ive EVER had amps get hot in any setup was when they were a) $hitty quality to begin with or b) being run well under their rated load.

I ran my American bass 500.1s daily at 0.33 ohms for several months. They got warm but no problems. Over 155 db with 2 amps daily driven.

in my explorer I used to have a Profile Baja HA1000 amplifier sitting between the box and the rear seats...wrapped it up in a fleece blanket to keep it from banging around...that thing got HOOTTTTT...but never shut down...tough inexpensive amp.
