Pulling my hair out here. 2007 Explorer 8.8 rear differential rebuild. Trying to find specs for the install depth for the needle bearings where the CV axles enter the case. Can’t find anything online and even Alldata doesn’t have any information. Anyone here with a factory service manual? I don’t want to install these on a guess. Thanks.

Measure the old one or buy the oem install (factory manual says use the tool - no depth explained)tool if u think its important to you

Ive installed this bearing approximated a 1/16 inch from the inner edge

In my opinion , to matter where it seats unless the bearing outer race are fully supported.

In any case ,mine are after 50000 miles or so and still going.no vibrations or leaks

I don’t have the old one to measure from. I also have the factory Ford install tool, and to be honest, it’s pretty worthless. By the time you hit the “step” machined into the tool, the bearing would be nearly pressed completely through the case, so the tool isn’t an indicator of where to stop.

I’m about to order a factory service manual (both volumes) off eBay, but you’re saying Ford doesn’t even list a spec for this??

I would be looking for a witness mark where the old was installed in housing or rode on stub shaft.

Case has already been completely cleaned and powdercoated. There has to be a spec listed for this. I can’t imagine Ford just threw these things in and landed them wherever.

Yea
Save your money.here is the stub shaft bearing page ( the only related info except of the diff case crossection view somewhere in the manual - i cant locate it right now but as far as i know , the manual refers to the tool only as depth indicator)

What factory tool do you have? The exact 205D055 plus 205504 p/n?

As far as i know the 205-504 rotunda tool is the locating tool so you cant mess the depth somehow.see the ebay lot photo.the depth should be something about bearing width plus 50% as i remember.measure from the seal inner hole surface.

Anyway if you want any another screenshots from the manual just let me know, i have the volumes both

Dont ask why they are reusing the gen3 shop manual images on gen 4 manual.

Thanks. I’ll double check things when I get home this evening. I would’ve thought the tool would locate the bearing as well. But this is the one I bought off eBay:

this one should fit older mustangs with the 8.8 diff case ( the housing itself may vary because of the seal and the cv shafts are different)

So is the one I have incorrect?

Edit: Turns out this is actually an 08-10 diff, not an 07.

No idea if they changed the diff case thru years.hard to believe so

Check the tool specs ( rotunda or otc mfg site) they should give this kind of info
