After I set my speed control, my 1996 4.0 now usually gradually speeds up. It didn't do this until about a month ago, after I hadn't driven it for a week or two. (Good motorcycle weather!) I don't know if that would have anything to do with it or not. Idle is occasionally, but not often, erratic, but has been for the last year or so ever since I bought it.

Any ideas on where to start? Thanks!

this post is a duplicate of another one

Yes, I inadvertantly posted it on the 2006-2010 Explorer forum. Guilty as charged. :nono: I explained in the newer forum that I had posted it in the wrong place. I thought maybe people who owned 1995-2001 Explorers could possibly answer my question better. Sorry about any confusion.

Anybody heard of this problem?

The first thing I'd do is confirm the throttle and/or cruise cables aren't binding.

What I think is more likely if the truck is speeding up is a defective vehicle speed sensor or it's wiring. If it's not correctly counting the pulses of the turning wheel it will fool the electronics in the servo into believing the truck is moving at less than the set speed and open the throttle to compensate.

The manual says to unplug the speed sensor connector and measure the resistance across it's pins. If it's not between 200 and 300 ohms to replace it. Or you may have a wiring problem between the speed sensor and the servo.
