Speedo not working

Hey all,
Got a question on how i should go about fixing my speedometer. I donnow what happend, but ever since ive had the Ex the speedo will work fine up to like 55mph, and then it starts bouncing up and down from 55 on and i can hear a kind of winding noise or something... and cant get a clear reading, its a real pain on the highway....cuz i dont know how fast im going excactly. Just figured id finally get around to fixing that.

Anyhow, any ideas on how to fix this, is it an electronic sensor, or a mechanical gear and cable deal. Any help welcome.

Its mechanical. probably a cable issue but not definately. take the gear out of the transfer case and see how well it turns. Shouldnt be terribly difficult

Sounds like the gear to me. Maybe the cable mount clip broke off or rusted though and let loose. they do that sometimes and them the cable works it's way out. It may be worn from backing out.

yeah mine does the same thing, bounces after 55mph.. same whining noise as well... anymore answerws out there on this?

Have an Escort that did this. it was actually the Speedo itself. When you hear that noise, the magnets were slipping on the armeture, or at least that's what the speedo shop told me. you can find shop around you that rebuilds them, just take it out of your cluster and take it down there. I found one, it cost me about one hundred bucks, and it works like a champ. WAY cheaper than going to ford.

I think it is the speedo head. I had the samething happen in a older windstar that was cable driven.The head unit made a whine noise.
