I need someone's help. My wife barrowed my X and now the engine is squeaking like crazy, when I am driving, turning, and even in park with the engine at idle. She says she did nothing wrong, but who knows. In the morning I will pop the hood and check around. I'm thinking starter, flywheel, or maybe power steering pump. She has a habit of turning the key a little longer than necessary to start a car.

I changed the belt a while ago and have had no trouble so I'm hoping it is not a serious problem.

HELP Does this sound like anything someone has encountered?

I was gonna suggest the belt but then you said you just replaced it. My thinking is the alternator or A/C pulley.

thanks Alec I check tomorrow morning and let you know.

Thanks again for the quick reply.

Sounds like you have the usual suspects covered. Start with the serp. belt then proceed on to the flywheels. May have a bearing going out...
Good Luck!:redexp:

it really sounds like a pully.. is it idling a bit rough too? I had my truck start to squeak and shake a bit @ idle.. and one day I just lost power steering and my alt died. It wound up being that the pully snapped, and belt flew off. so check it out.. it sounds familiar to me

I'll through my 2 cents worth in. "Belt tensioner"

I'll have to go with Bill.

Check the belt tensioner. Maybe it wasn't adjusted tight enough when the belt was replaced. Or maybe it loosened up with use.

Here we go....

It was the water pump making the noise, but at the same time I noticed the belt tenisoner was loose you could shake the fan back and forth by hand with no problem (any longer it probably would have come loose and go right through the radiator).

It took me a couple of hours and a couple of hundred to change both, what I fun job. I must say it seems to be running alot better and all the noise is gone.

Thanks, for all you help guys...

I have an interesting one here. I changed the water pump and tensioner as indicated above but now when I am driving the temperature guage is going up and down. It will go almost to the H (hot) maker then suddenly drop all the way down to the C (cold). I am wondering if anyone out there has seen this before. I am thinking thermostat or temperature coolant sensor maybe????

I am afraid I will have the fun of overheating now after doing all that work.

Help?

Thanks Ed

Yeah sounds like the usual culprits. But the thermostat usually only stays open all the time or stays closed all the time. But not both.....Check the temeprature sender first.

Before you start replacing anything else, wait and make sure you have all the air out of the system. I think parking facing uphill overnight is supposed to help. If it is still doing it, replace the radiator cap. The spring weakens and the system won't hold pressure, resulting in the cycling of the thermostat. Cheapest fix around!

I will give it a try and let you know.

Thanks, guys

It looks like it might have been the tensioner that was still loose. I guess I didn't tighten it enough. Well while I was there I decided to go through with it and change the termostat and hoses as well. At least I won't to have worry about them in the near future. The guage still does it a little but I think it is OK. If it still happens my last thing to try is the coolant temperature sender sensor. Even though I am having to do this work I love it because it is my Ex :bounce: (as you can see).
