I have a buddy that took his 98 xlt X off roadin and about 40 miles after the mud was over and done with it began to sueak and is seems as if it were the shocks becuase the sound comes when ever the body is moved. But note it happens when the wells are cut too. I though it might need grease on the tie rod but he tells me that he took it to wal-mart and they said they couldn't grease it becuase it had not fittings. So I told him id look at it but I dont wanna buy shocks if it is unneeded. His mileage is 110,000 but the owners befor him where people he knew and and drove it easy.

At 100k it's probably time for balljoints. The original balljoints are known to crap out early. Use some Synthetic grease on all the bushings as they really squeak when they get dry, especially the sway bar bushings.

are ball joints not very difficult to deal with? Ill look it up in the haynes but if ya have any in put on an easy way please let me know

so do they need to be greased or replaced?

the haynes states : 1995 and later models-The balljoints on upper and lower control arms are not removable or serviceable. If a balljoint is damaged or worn, replace the control arm

bump for help, im having the same problem

okay so the sqeek only happens when the body is rocked? cauz a sqeek can be many many things.. i had a sqeek last weekend and it turned out to be the u-joint at the rear diff.. you need to do a diagnosis and find out exactly whats making that squeek. note that some squeeks are normal.. i mean it maybe the leaf spring pads (that go between the leaves) are just worn down, or it could be something more severe. but diagnose it properly before you start spending money... get under the car and have soome1 slowly jump up and down on the bumper or something... slide around under the car and zero in on the sqeek.
