I have searched this and have found many possible culprits. Just turned my rotors and replace the pads yesterday after work and the squeak is still there. I know this is something common on 2nd gens but just can't remember what it is. Does anyone know off the top of their head?

I think it might be the lower ball joints. It squeeks all the time, like the indicator is rubbing from the brakes.

dry cv joint or u joint?

SOunds better than ball joints

Is the noise consistant or intermittent? If consistant, I would check the wheel bearings. I had the same problem a few weeks ago. Checked my brakes but they were okay. Drove a week or two longer and the squeak turning into a groaning noise. Replaced the hub assembly and everything is back to normal.

It is a constant screeching sound, like bad brakes

Are you sure your backing plates aren't rubbing against your rotors?

Absolutly, we were just working on them yesterday.

Damn, to replace the wheel bearing you have to replace the whold hub assembly!!

Any one have any suggestions?

I had the same thing happen to me, it turned out it was the rear brakes! I worked like crazy on the fronts and didn't think to check the backs. Not sure if you have but if not it would be worth checking.

i replaced/repacked my bearings while I did the brakes...very easy job.

if the frequency of the squeek is dependant on the speed you're travelling, it might be the u-joint.. this is usually described more of as a "chirp" at low speeds..

as a side note:
i had a squeek that wouldnt go away but eventually narrowed it down to a transmission going bleh ... diagnostics.. i know ur not "supposed" to do this but what i did was, since i dont have a transfer case that i can put into neutral, i jacked up the rear (jack stands), removed the front driveshaft, and had my uncle put the explorer in drive and he kept the rear wheels turning at relatively low speeds.. i then slide under the car and as quick as i can, listened to where the sound was coming from - which turned out to be right under the tranmission pan.. so about 2 weeks later, out that transmission went and in went in a rebuit one.. another alternative to raising the rear axle is to disconnect both driveshafts from the transfer case - which, would have actually been easier i think...

I have a similar squeeking issue that I still haven't dealt with; mechanic said glazed rotors are the culprit- the only time it doesn't squeek is when I have the brakes applied...

we had the same prob with my dads 97 V8 AWD. one of the rear roators was destroyed. all the others where fine. really weird. anyhow it gave off a screech noise all the time also.
