91 Explorer- will not idle without foot on throttle. Without throttle, will lose power at 1000 RPM, and stall, after putting severly. Sounds like there is a vacuum leak under hood- when shut truck off it makes a squealing/whoosing sound. What gives? Any help?

Thanks!

That happened to a friends '92. I can't remember what the diagnosis was, but I'll try and find out. Sounds like itcould be a vacuum line.
Sorry maybe more help later

This exact thing happened on my sons Ranger. It was the IAC (Idle Air Control) module. You have one mounted to the rear (firewall side) of the Throttle Body. Easy to replace, about $66 from Ford. You can take it off and clean it with TBody cleaner, but that will just buy you about a week. But you can try cleaning it, you have to remove it to do this, and if that clears it up, go buy one 'cause like I said it's just buying time. My money says thats it.

I have a '91 Ford Explorer doing the same idle stall - but a little different.

It'll start and warm up okay in the morning, but when shifting into drive, driving a bit, and then waiting at a stoplight or something, it'll then drop RPMs to 1000 and eventually stall.

Also experiencing same problems as NH_91EddieBauer with leak noise and whoosing sound.

Idle prob

Check for a missing vacuum CAP on the whatchmacalllit, the stem with like 6 or 7 vacuum hoses coming off it. Feel with your fingers for the one on the back side, facing the fire wall. they tend to come off, and there is no vacumm hose for it, it is just capped off. that happened to me and I looked forever for that dang loose vacuum hose hose when in reality there wasnt one, just the stem and a cap that came off.

Tried the Idle Air Controller, but...

I replaced the IAC and still my idle drops very low.

Same problems as before - whooshing air sound coming from the back of the engine. When I sit at a stop light the idle drops so low that the car begins to rock back and forth, and eventually dies.

Anyone have ideas? Thanks-

Andy

If you can't find a vacuum leak, try cleaning the MAF sensor. It fixed my idle problem on my 91 Explorer.
Go to the Explorer Tips link at the top of the page, it
shows you how. Good luck.

Now it vibrates...

Okay... changed the Idle Air Controller, cleaned the MAF, and checked the vacuum thing by the firewall. I think I'm missing the hose to the CCD - what's the CCD?

I capped the CCD stemand the car runs fine at idle, however now it vibrates a lot when accelerating between 5-20mph and then from 60-75mph on the freeway. There's also a dull droaning sound coming from the front of the car - the engine maybe?

Lastly, is my car sensing that I just put a deposit down on a new car? Thanks for your help-

Andy
