my auto tranny was rebuilt before i bought my ex. after i put about 40,000 some miles on it, now i have to problem that after driving enough to get the tranny up to temp, it feels like when i take off from a stop the tranny is in second gear. the rpms will climb to about 2500 and then the tranny acts like it down shifts and the ex gains speed rapidly. is there a easy fix? i have another tranny sitting in the garage, but i have to get my rx7 runnig again to get around to changing out the tranny.

I cannot fathom this one. Candidly.... I am suspecting you are looking at a teardown. Do you have manual first ?

I would suggest that you adjust your kick down cable, and check for ATF in the vacuum hose going to the modulator. How often do you have to add ATF? Do you hear any grinding noises from the transmission when it is stuck between gears? You should also adjust your intermediate band.

i have manual first. i don't have to add any ATF. it started to do this a little bit, and then i changed the ATF and filter. i changed them because of how many mile that i put on the tranny. it stopped for a week and it started doing it again. there is no noise coming from the tranny. i'll try adjusting the kick down cable.

Ah.... manual 1st. Well my guess changes a little. I would have been looking at a one way clutch failure or a forward clutch issue, but manual 1st uses all three, so I think that rules those out. I'm thinking your governor may be plugged up somehow, damaged, or you may have some valve body issues. Before I pulled it I would suggest letting me trace out some hydarulic flow diagrams to be a little more certain, and if I am, then I'd suggest you maybe rebuild your VB and see if that solves it, and if not, then have a go at the governor. Have you dropped the pan yet? What does the fluid look like? and if the pan is dropped is there any metal?

when i dropped the pan to do the filter change there was a little bit of metal, but not a whole lot. wheres a good place to get a manual for the tranny. the ex is my DD right now until i get my motor rebuilt for my mazda and then i'm going to swap trannys. i got one for free thats got 50 some thousand miles on it. i'm asking what it could be because if its a easy fix i fix it in the truck and keep driving it.

Any metal shavings aren't good sign. You could have serious internal damage. ATSG has a regular manual, and an update manual for your vehicle. Ford makes a big 3 ring binder that has pretty much everything. If you get all 3 books, you should have everything you need. Print out the VB rebuild diary, and the main rebuild diary too. Glacier once mentioned that a dealer printed out the diaries for their mechanics to refer to while doing their rebuilds!

i found out that if i shift into drive and leave it there the tranny will shift like it should.
