I had starting problems with wife's 02 4.0 L explorer. It would occasionally crank for several seconds before starting. I replaced the fuel filter and fuel pump module (Got it at Rock Auto for around $100.00) and the problem went away. After cutting apart the old fuel filter, the problem could have been caused by it alone - as dirty as it was, but I figured after 174K miles it was probably due for a new fuel pump anyhow.
