Someone down the street from me is selling a nice 1997 ford explorer, but has a bad steering column. I was wondering how hard and how much it cost to fix?

depends on what you know. i changed the one in my 98 sport a few years ago, and never did one before. the factory one didn't have tilt or cruise, and the one i put in did. i stared at it for about 45 mins before i dug in. it took me about 2 to 3 hours to pull it out, and about a hour to put back in. for me, it wasn't to hard at all.

What tools do you need to complete the job? anything in particular?

nothing out of the ordinary. i think you need either a 6, 7, 8, 10, 15, 18 mm sockets, pry bar, a few extensions. that and, to make things easier, take a picture where everything goes in case you think you may forget.
