At parking lot speeds, the power steering in my 1997 Mountie sometimes feels like I just lost power assist. As I turn the wheel, it will go through some areas that feel fine, and some that take a lot of effort. It does not do it every time, nor does it seem like it is the same spot in the steering arc every time.
It is so intermittent that I cannot say for sure that it is temperature related, although it is certainly getting colder in the Northeast.
I searched on this and couldn't find anyone with the same experience. My thinking is that the power steering pump is temporarily losing tension. I guess the other possibilities are a failing rack, or failing pump.
Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.
