I have a 91 Explorer that has recently started leaking power steering fluid out of the bottom of the steering gearbox. I was told by an employee of AutoZone that they sell a replacement seal kit but I am not sure if it is something I want to try. I put some Lucas Oil power steering stop leak in it and it stops it from leaking for about a week and then it starts again. Is this something a weekend warrior can do or is this something best left to a pro? With labor at $65 to $70 an hour here in my area what would I be looking at roughly to get it fixed? thanks in advance for any help!!!:us:

A leaking seal is sometimes an indicator of other problems, usually worn parts. I would suggest just replacing the whole steering box with a remanufactured unit. It can be done by a DIY'r with a puller and some hand tools.

You can get a seal replacment from napa. Possible at other stores but it would be easier to get another box.

gear box

i tackled the problem like 4 years ago and it is a b#@ch i tried my self but no luck even with the puller, i even had a impact gun and still could not get the pitman arm off so i would just bring it to a shop it will be worth it.

Sounds like I better let a pro do this, it hasn't leaked in a couple days since put the Lucas stop leak in so I will probably try to get it in a shop maybe next time I head south where the labor isn't so high and I can get my old mechanic to do it that is too honest for his own good sometimes. :D Hate being in a place where you don't have a good hometown mechanic you can trust.
