steering wheel driving me nuts!

ok folks.. this just started today and i can't take it. when i turn the wheel even the slightest bit i get a creaking sound... sounds kind of like rubber rubing against rubber i guess for a reference. only problem is that the sound seems to be coming from near where the steering rod goes into the floor. almost like its from the little knuckle piece right there where it goes into the floor. it only seems to happen when the truck is running and it takes a turn or two to get it going. i didn't see anything resting on this piece and causing the sound so i'm looking for suggestions.
i did a little offroading this weekend if that helps. nothing even considered mild, but there were some deep water holes (up the bottom of the door). any suggestion greatly appreciated!

Maybe that boot down there needs to be greased?

hmm.. i didn't see a boot but i'll look again. a rubber boot like on shocks or something? i'll update if this solves the problem. thanks jason

There is a service bulletin for this problem. I don't know the number, but do a search. I've seen it on here before. It replaces the power steering hose and bracket. It sounds like you have the same problem I do. I have a 98 sport.

yeah i have the same exact problem in my explorer. My 98 makes the same exact noise.

hmm.. i didn't see anything when i searched. maybe i was looking for the wrong thing. so was it fixed when you replaced the hose and bracket?

Actually I haven't had it done yet. I can't afford it since I just got Rancho 9000's and shackles. But I do know that a few people here have had it done. I think Alphasylum has had it done. I don't think it's hurting anything, Just annoying. Try typing in "steering groan" when you do the search.
