My '91 Explorer has started to make a whining noise when steering while the gas pedal is being pushed. If you're not gassing it, then it doesn't seem to be that bad, or if you straighten out, but otherwise it makes these loud whines. It's almost scary. If anyone knows what might be up, please let me know!

it is the ford steering pump ALL FORD$ ARE LIKE THIS

fluid is low..find the leak and replace or tighten

Just letting u know that I have a '93 Explorer and it does the same thing. I checked the fluid and it is not low. The funny thing is that the steering pump is bran spank'in new, and it still whines so bad. But what can u do....I guess live with it.

Fords do that. Mine leaked, so I replaced it with a remanufactured one. $35.00 plus my time to put it in. My wife broke down in Arkansas two months later while moving from NC to AZ. It cost $400.00 for Ford to install another one. But it was a brand new one. If you do replace it, get a new one. Fluid spewed everywhere, and smoked a lot. They thought the truck was on fire.

I have a '92 and it does the same thing. It is especially annoying in parking garages making all those damn turns.
