Hi all,
I think I've only posted once in the past. I have a 94 4.0 XLT eAWD (112,000 miles) that has been pinging for a while. I got it two years ago from a family member who could no longer drive and had it in the garage for 5 years. The pinging began after a change of spark plugs, wires, PCV valve. After research I concluded it had to be a vacuum leak, it only happens under load and I also have a somewhat lumpy idle though it's not bad enough to notice when my kids are squirming in the back.
Yesterday I removed the air intake snorkel and filter box and tried to check all the vacuum hoses for leaks or cracks. I did unplug the airflow sensor. While I was at it I removed and cleaned the throttle body as it looked pretty gross. I didn't change the gasket as it looked serviceable. I will note I didn't find any damaged hoses, the van was garage kept its whole life and well looked after, so I think it's the intake.
When I put everything back together I know I didn't miss anything though I did leave the plastic shield off the throttle body as it had broken at the rear screw mount. Now the engine is is exhibiting a different sound than before - at most speeds it seems to have a slight popping sound, almost like a sterling/CO2 engine. I'm going to double check connections this morning and see if I missed anything, even though I'm positive I didn't.
Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Also, while I'm here, any tips on tightening up the lower intake bolts - I'm pretty skinny but it's still a tight squeeze...
