Well I live in Bakersfield and it gets pretty dang hot here. Yesterday i parked my X for a few hours and when I got back in my temp on my overhead console said it was 126 degrees. The after a few min. it just said SC instead of a temp. Any ideas what this means?

Was 105 in your town yesterday, if you parked in direct sun for several hrs I can see 126 degs as accurate.
The painted surfaces and sheet metal can well exceed 150 degs on a dark colored car in direct sun.
Did it return to ambiant after you drove awhile?
Dunno what SC is have only seen mine display ICE at 38 Degs.
Maybe the unit was Self Calibrating (SC)

Got in it this after noon and it was back to registering normal temps... if 120 degrees is normal... Sometimes black cars and trucks suck...

according to the 96 manual, the "SC" is short circuit and the "OC"... not Orange County but open circuit.... perhaps it was so hot that the thermister went to very low resistance which the unit thought was a short.

It started doing it again tonight and it was only 91 degrees. It said SC for about 20 min then switched back to a normal temp reading.

It appears that perhaps the sensor and / or connector has a problem then. You might want to unplug it / plug it back in and see if anything changes. And if possibly take an ohm meter reading of it when it says "SC".
