When I press the accelerator when moving off in my '98 Explorer, there is a sound like someone pouring out a bucket of water, as well as the usual engine noise, sounds odd to you?, sounds very odd to me, do you have any advice?

regards

Did you loose power since the noise started, I had a similar noise on another car, it was the cat converter that was pluged with debris. Check if your exhaust system is flowing freely, it may be the answer to your noise. Then maybe not, but have no more idea.

Hi Mr Camster, and welcome to the site.
Is your 98 a SOHC engine? if it is, then I think what your are hearing is the air going through the intake. All SOHC's do this and it only happens on the SOHC engine. My 95 OHV didn't have this problem, but my 97 SOHC does. I talked to a Ford Engineer at the Truckhaven run and they know about it. He said it had to do with the plastic input tube, and they weren't making too much progress with it(read "we are not going to do anything about it"). You get used to it, but at first I took it back to Ford, because I thought something was wrong, and they told me that same thing. "it's normal"

If it comes from under you dash, it sounds like what I have been trying to figure out for quite some time.
The sound I have is a water like swishing, sometimes its there everyday, and then it goes away, other times I only hear when I accel. And sometimes I gets louder when your parked and rev it up a little.
I though it was air in the heater core, but I am yet to solve this.

thanks for your views, this morning in fact I heard the same noise, but when the car is warmed up, it seems to go away.
You have all given me some ideas to what may be causing it but it really is murphy's law that I have the car that makes a weird slushing noise and Ford dealers just think I am nuts!

Take a look at this site. Scroll down to 98-5-14 regarding transmission noise.

This description does not do the actual noise or solution any justice. The remody is an addition of a plate in the tranny to redirect the flow of the transmission fluid. This sound you are hearing may be this.

During one of the recalls on my 98 I had Ford look into the hissing noise which turn out to be the plastic intake pletum. They told me my 98 which was built in June of 98 already had the plate.

Just a thought.
